Segmented Ball Valves vs. Globe Valves

August 18th 2022

Both segment valves and shut-off valves are user-approved valves, but they also have their pros and cons. And there are also differences between these two valves. This article will introduce them to you.

Segmented Ball Valves

A segmented ball valve is a ball valve with a v-notch segment in the ball. It is a control valve with good control, adjustable range and shut-off capability. What’s more, this valve is capable of producing high capacity and non-clogging flow. Segmented ball valves can maximize the capacity and closure integrity and seal life with specially shaped ball.

Segmented Ball Valves vs. Globe Valves

How Does it Work?

A Segmented ball valve gives a quarter turn to open or close fluid flow. The valve has a hollow spherical ball segment supported by a bearing and shaft on the actuator side of the valve. The drive shaft is attached to one side of the ball and the driven shaft is attached to the other side. As the drive shaft rotates, the segmented ball rotates, exposing the flow path through the V-notch.

Applications

1.Apply in petroleum industries because they can withstand flammable products.

2.Control the flow of chemicals in chemical plants, paper and pulp industries.

3.They can be used in sewage treatment plants to work on solid particles.

4.Control the flow of heating and cooling fluids in power industries.

5.Segmented ball valves are used in pharmaceutical industries to regulate the flow of production compounds.

6.They are used in food industries because of their ease to clean and maintenance.

Globe Valves

Segmented Ball Valves vs. Globe Valves

Applications

1. It is used for regulating and shut off process.

2.High-point vents and low-point drains when leaktightness and safety are major considerations. Feedwater, chemical feed, condenser air extraction, and extraction drain systems.

3.It can also be used at those places where pressure drop is not an issue, such as lube oil reservoir, feed-water, or chemical containers.

4.Globe valve is used in coolant loops, lubrication systems, steam lines, etc. where regulating the fluid flow is very important and cannot be attained without a valve.

5.These valves are used in buildings where there is a need for the upstream fluid flow, such as water heaters and other equipment.

6.Cooling water systems where flow needs to be regulated

7.Fuel oil system where flow is regulated and leaktightness is of importance.

Differences

1.Fluid resistance

The fluid resistance of the Segmented ball valve is small, and its resistance coefficient is equal to that of the pipe section of the same length. The shut-off valve has a large fluid resistance and requires a large force when opening and closing.

2.Applications

The Segmented ball valve is especially suitable for media containing fibers, tiny solid particles, etc. Globe valves can be used to control the flow of various types of fluids such as air, water, steam, various corrosive media, mud, oil, liquid metal and radioactive media.

3.Structure

The globe valve relies on the rotation of the lever on the valve to change the position of the diaphragm to block the water flow. The Segmented ball valve controls the flow of water by moving the base through the rotation of the bearing.

4.Cost

Compared with the globe valve, the Segmented ball valve is more convenient to install and maintain, because its sealing ring is movable and easier to disassemble. The globe valve is fixed on it, so it is not easy to disassemble it.

5.Sealing Performance

The sealing performance of the globe valve is better than that of the Segmented ball valve.

Both segmented ball valve and globe valve are widely used in different industries because of their great performance. Choose the appropriate valves according to the working environment.
